Research Abstract |
This report is composed of some results, investigated by us on the urbanization, change of the water balance and hydrological environment in the Tokyo Metropolitan Region. The findings in these investigations can be summarized as follows : Great changes are occurring in the townscapes on the Tokyo Bay, for example, the Makuhari New Center (Chiba City), the Minato-Mirai 21 (MM21, Yokohama City), the Rinkai Sub Center (Tokyo Metropolis) and the Tokyo Disneyland. Through these recent large-scale developments, new cityscapes are appearing along the reclaimed seaside as a waterfront landscape. Balance of water supply since 1960 in Tokyo Metropolis was made clear. Systems for the flow of water supply and sewage in Kanagawa Prefecture, and hydrological environment in the Hadano basin (Kanagawa Prefecture) was analyzed too. On the water supply in Saitama Prefecture the rate of diffusion, the utilization and regional characteristics were made clear. It is recognized that there is alienation between population increase and waterworks planning. For the basin of Tsurumi River covering parts of Machida City, Kawasaki City and Yokohama City, land use maps were made for 1967 and 1990. It is clear that rapid and large-scale urbanization is proceeding for the most part of the basin. Change in water pollution of the Tsurumi and its tributary streams were clarified. On the Yoro River in Chiba Prefecture, it is recognized that waste water from Yoro Spa contributed much to the water pollution. Vegetation cover ratio and spring water amounts and quality were surveyed in spatial and time sequences in the Nogawa River basin (Tokyo). Human-induced pollution was made clear as a result.
