Research Abstract |
We designed and manufactured an Radio Interferometric Receiver to reconstruct lightning channels and progressions inside thunderclouds to understand lightning features. To obtain the high time resolution we digitize the observed data every one microsecond. The receiver consists of eight channels, and the volume of one data set is 20 Mbytes. Due to the enormous size of a data set it is not easy to realize a real time data processing. We operate the Interferometer to observe the Laser Triggered Lightning, and the demand to get a real time image of a lightning channel is increasing. At the beginning of this project we intended to achieve our requirement by using the Digital Signal Processor (DSP). We recognized the recent development of Engineering Workstation (EWS) enables us to carry out the real time data processing. We reorganized the whole system including Interferometric receiver, A/D converter and EWS.We finally realize the quasi Real Time Data Processing for Lightning Observations, and conducted the Winter Thunderstorm Project and the maritime Continent Thunderstorm Experiment. During these two project we operated our Interferometer and captured many interesting data sets. The data processing in detail is now undergoing.
