The cluster-ion-beam apparatus with a discharge-flow ion source was developed and ion-molecule reactions of ArN_2^+ with simple aliphatic hydrocarbons, Kr, and CO_2 were studied. A characteristic reactivity of cluster ions, which is different from that of free ions, was found. This apparatus was succussfully applied to the study of ion-molecule reactions of CO_2^+ and CF_3^+ with simple aliphatic hydrocarbons and such aromatic compounds as benzene derivatives, and the formation processes of cluster ions were examined. For example, we found that cluster ions were produced in the CO_2^+/CH_4, CF_3^+/C_2H_2, CF_3^+/PhX(X=C_2H,CN,OCH_3, COH,COCH_3, COOCH_3) reactions : e.g., CF_3^++C_2H_2*CF_3C_2H_2^+ (1) A systematic optical study on rare gas heterocluster ions was also performed using a highpressure discharge-flow apparatus. New ArKr^+ and KrXe^+ emissions were observed from the Ar afterglow reaction of Kr and Kr afterglow reaction of Xe, and their electronic structures wered etermined. At higher rare gas stagnation pressures, new bound-free transitions of rare gas heterotrimer ions such as HeAr_2^+ were found. These emissions are expected to be useful as new excimer lasers in the vacuum ultraviolet region.
