Research Abstract |
For the purpose of learning the character of middle aged to senior athletes' strength profile and obtaining the necessary data for prescribing safe and effective training programs, the following study was conducted : On 104 middle aged and senior swimmers (male 62 : ages 12 to 69, average 34.1, female 42 : ages 12-64, average 42.0), after thorough explanation and receiving consent, following a medical check, knee extension/flexion strength were measured using Cybex 6000. The 4 values were studied based on two angular velocity of 60 degrees/sec and 180 degrees/sec. 1) Maximum value of peak torque 2) Peak torque/weight 3) Maximum value of work 4) Maximum value of average power (work/time) There proved to be significant difference between the right leg and the left leg, therefore only the values of the right leg were analyzed by sex and age group (statistical significance : 1%). As a result, it was observed that in both male and female the strength tends to decline as one ages, while difference among individual was quite apparent, and that the effect of aging was relatively significant in the decline of knee extension strength than that of knee flexion strength. When prescribing a training program for middle aged athletes, it is necessary to strengthen the knee extension strength, after due consideretion to each individual's strength, for maintaining the usual movement in daily life, preventing joint disease and fall accidents and improving the quality of life.
