Research Abstract |
Following the preliminary test of Van de Graaf type DC high voltage generator in the last year, the test has progressed on the ballon of 6m diameter, fastened to the stage in high of 4 m on ground, and charged up to about 1 MV under the effect of wind. The test were carried out as follows ; (1) As a preliminary for ground test, the charging test on polyethylene tube of 0.23 m diameter with 0.1mm thickness was carried out in laboratory. The ring wire electrode charged to positive voltage to plane electrode grounded was developed to make a positive corona discharge at the wire electrode. The charge density on the tube surface was measured with a field-mill meter as 3.8 mu C/m at the charging voltage 14.7KV on the wire. (2) The high voltage generator for the artificial lightning discharge was constructed on the ground of our college. The stage for fastening the ballon of 6 m diameter was supported with four tubes of 4 m length and 8 cm dia-meter of polyvinyl-chloride in the insulated condition from ground. The balloon was successfully blew up on the stage by heating with propane gas burners. The roller of 1 m diameter on the stage and the other two rollers on ground were rotated to transfer the charge deposited on the poly-ethylene tube surface moved with rollers. The surface charge was successfully transferred to the balloon up to the high voltage, then the charge was discharged to ground with a spark-over. After the experiment of 5 MV charging with 16 m diameter ballon, the prospect of the experiment of 50MV charging with 80 m diameter balloon in the future will be given.
