Research Abstract |
Inclusion particles which remain in final metal products cause various defects like slivers in steel products. The purpose of the present study is to develop a method for inclusion separation from liquid metal by the use of AC-pinch force. The following studies have been made : 1.Investigation of the behavior of a spherical particle in an electromagnetic force field A uniform electromagnetic force in the downward direction was imposed in a KCI-aqueous solution contained in a glass cell in which an alternating current and AC magnetic field were simultaneously imposed. A polystirene spherical particle having larger density than liquid was then put into the KCI solution and the current was regulated so as to make electromagnetic force balanced with gravity force acting on the particle. The estimated balancing condition between these forces obtained from the DC-electromagnetic force theory agreed well with the observed results, and hence, the DC-force theory was found to be applicable to AC-

force field. 2.Model experiments by the use of mercury (1)Measurement of pressure due to pinch force : Pressure due to pinch force in a mercury cylinder was measured by a manometer method. The estimated and measured values agreed well with each other for various currents. (2)Separation of water drop from mercury : A water drop was injected from the bottom of a vertical glass cylinder containing mercury in which an alternating current was imposed and the vertical position where the drop reached the glass wall was measured. These positions for various currents agreed with theoretical estimations. 3.Separation of inclusions from liquid tin Firstly, the method for suspending oxide particles in liquid tin was investigated. The most effective method was to put compacts of tin and ZrO_2-powder mixture into a liquid tin and Zro_2-powder mixture into a liquid tin vigorously stirred in an agitation vessel. However, only 0.05% powders of ZrO_2 remained in the tin bath. Improvement should be pursued in the future study. Secondly, the tin melt suspending ZrO_2 powder was poured into a glass cylinder and an alternating current was imposed. The separation efficiency observed was about 70% based on the chemical analysis of oxygen in tin. The separation experiment in a flow system could not be made because of the small yield of oxide powder in liquid metal. Less
