| Research Abstract |
In this research, which has its foundation on our preceding studies on life and man, we have addressed problems concerning identity. Needless to say, identity is a philosophical concept that is of great importance and has various implications. We have discussed the views presented by each of us on the basis of his or her special interest in the concept, and thereby aimed at elucidating the meaning of the concept from as many perspectives as possible.
The specialty of the investigators varies from philosophy, ethics, religion, to the history of science. In addition, different investigators study different areas of the world, such as Europe, Japan, China and India. This makes it necessary and possible to make interdisciplinary and comparative studies that are not restricted to any particular field or area. As a result, we have reached a position that enables us to view the various aspects of the concept of identity, namely the aspects that are the products of cultural factors that worked in different times and places. But, on the other hand, this means that what we have attained is only a provisional conclusion that the concept is too rich in content to comprehend once and for all. It is necessary, therefore, to continue the research to find a philosophical standpoint that integrates those various aspects of the concept.
