Research Abstract |
ADHD or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is considered to be disorder which already becomes evident when children are in their infancy. In many cases, however, it is taken up as the problem for the first time when children are about to take part in life in a group. At the same time, the disorder is likely to induce, among other things, behavioral problems, such as resistance and provocation, action disorders like anti-social behavior, emotional disorders like anxiety and depression as well as a slump in studies. Not to mention itself, ADHD is not confined to childhood alone but is also carried over in to adulthood as a secondary disorder. It is thus crucial to understand and tackle it appropriately. First, a fact-finding survey was conducted on 14 different types to behavior described as ADHD in DSM-III-R.The survey covered 1,507 ordinary children, ranging in age from 4 to 15. In the case of boys, seven- to nine-year-old gained the highest appearance rate of 13.6 percent, wher

eas four- to six- year- old among girls scored the highest rate, or 8.3 percent. As boys and girls grew older, their appearance rates declined respectively. The outcome suggested that girls show a developmental decline in such behavior some two to three years earlier than boys do. Second, in order to see how ADHD has changed as children grow older, a similar survey was conducted again two years later. The survey covered children who had been four to 12 years old in the previous one. Respondents were 651. T he result : 6.8 percent of those responded gained high ADHD scores in both surveys. Significant changes were not detected in groups of children who scored high points in both hyper active impulsive and careless factors. It was careless factor scores that underwent changes as children grew older. Among the factor s were those which declined, remained unchanged or increased, suggesting that multiple causes are related to careless factor-induced behavior. It came to light that such behavior is closely related to problems concerning, among other things, children's studies as well as the relationship of their general classroom adjustments to their families and friends. In comprehending children's problematical behavior, it is thus vital to constantly take this into consideration. Less
