By scientific research funds of the 1994 fiscal year, IHARA Kosuke researched the documents on the buildings inhabited by clans in local gazetteers of Zhe-jiang, jiang-su, and AN-hui area, and the reports by Chinese art historians and building historians who investigated the buildings inhabited by clans in Zhe-jiang, Jiang-su, and An-hui area.
In the 1995 fiscal year, IHARA Kosuke collected and copied examples of clan's buildings especially in Zhe-jiang area, and arranged them as follows ;
(1) IHARA Kosuke arranged and classified the documents on a clan's worthy deeds (yi xing) described in Qian long "Zhe-jiang tong zhi" by family-names, by provinces and periods.
(2) Founded on the reports recently made by Chinese art and building historians IHARA Kosuke arranged the seats of buildings inhabited by clans, original owners of the buildings, explanation of the buildings, and floor plans of the buildings in Zhe-jiang.
By investigating these documents, IHARA Kosuke made clear of some features of clan's family. The features are :
1)The buildings inhabited by clans were large ones with "ting tang"
2)The life of a clan's family was supported by its land (zu tian).
3)Some clans had a private school.
4)Members of a clan lived in a village to form a community.
