Research Abstract |
For these three years I have been working on this subject, the development of Old English verbs of motion. The aim of this study is to examine all verbs of motion in the Old English period, their function and meaning, their features peculiar to that period, and to find instances which have never been reported in previous studies. For the first year, books, articles, and computer corpora had to be collected as basic materials. From the very first year I started publishing parts of the findings either at home or abroad. Whenever I went out of the country, I read papers, examined manuscripts in libraries, and kept on collecting materials for the subject. I have been to the International Conference on English Historical Linguistics (ICEHL) twice (Edinburgh and Poznan) and International Medieval Congress at University of Leeds twice. At home I delivered papers in general meetings of the English Linguistic Society of Japan three times in succession, in the Kyoto Conference on English Historical Linguistics and Philology, and in the Japan Society for Medieval English Studies. I read 5 papers at home, 4 abroad, wrote 16 articles (6 of which have already been published), one book and three joint works. The results will be incorporated into a book entitled The Development of the Verbs of Motion in Medieval English and will be published from the U.K.in the near future.
