Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to investigate Lafcadio Hearn's fifty four year career in as much detail as possible and to describe the stages of his career in the form of a chronological record. In this study I investigated the stages of Hearn's European and American days by : 1. Studying the fundamental reference books : I investigated the developments of his thought and behavior by perusing his fundamental materials such as all of his books, his manuscripts, his letters to some close friends and correspondents, the letters and diaries of persons who corresponded with him, etc. 2. Reading and collecting unpublished or rare materials : I read and collected the rare materials through the micro films of Hearn's letters and manuscripts with the cooperation of the Hearn Society in Matsue. 3. Presenting the results of the study : I published three papers in various bulletins. And I made a complete survey of the past two year's study on this subject that was compiled into a report of 277 pages. The most significant features are as follows : A) This is the first attempt that has ever been made to reconstruct his life in detailed chronological fashion. B) The detailed description of notes and the indication of sources to help other scholars pursue research in this area. C) the elucidation of the ways he collected materials and the process by which they were turned into works. D) Reconsideration of widely accepted notions and correcting mistakes, providing new opinions and facts and filling in blanks in his behavior.
