Research Abstract |
Optical and electro-optical properties have been investigated on beta-carotenes and related linear conjygated polyenes and polymers, inciuding diphenyl (DP) -octatetoraene, DP-hexatoriene, DP-butagene, poly silanes and polydiacetylenes, in the form of crystals and thin films, by means of third-order nonlinear optical spectroscopy such as electro-modu lated absorption spectroscopy, third-order harmonic generation spectroscopy, two-photon absorption spectroscopy and others. As a result, details of quasi-one-dimentional exciton structures in these linear conjugated molecules have been nelucideted. An important outcome is the first finding of specific polydiacetylenes which exhibit a reversible photo-induced phase transition between the two different electronic phases.
