Research Abstract

通常の電界イオン顕微鏡は金属系試料先端を曲率半径数十ナノメータにして試料温度を液体窒素温度以下にして、イメジングガスを用いて表面原子1個1個の像を得るものである。一般には試料温度が室温以上であるとイメジングガスの創る像がブレて分解能が落ち、原子の像は得られないと言われていた。研究代表者らは試料温度が赤熱状態でも、また、イメジングガスを用いなくても原子1個1個の像が得られることを発見した。
本研究においては高温電界イオン顕微鏡を作製し、その作像の機構を解明するものである。本年度の科学研究費は小額であったが、一部の部品を借用して、何とか高温顕微鏡が完成し高温における原子像を得ることができた。また、その作像機構も試料自身の原子がレッジを登るときにイオン化して作像をすることが明らかになったことは偉大な進展であった。試料温度を上昇させるほど明るい像がえられた。また、低融点の試料ほど明るい像が得られた。倍率は通常の電界イオン顕微鏡と較べて高く、これも低融点試料ほど高いようである。
本研究は思わぬ方向へ発展する可能性が得られた。その一つは陽電子顕微鏡として応用できるのではないか、という点である。将来さらにコンピュータ・シミュレーションなどのより高倍率の得られる原理や、イオン化の原理を解明したい。
