Research Abstract |
A number of western architectures were built in various places including the settlements in Japan through the end of Edo into the early Meiji period. The furnitures of the day must have been imported from Europe or China, for example Hong Kong and Shanghai, but those have gradually been producted even in Japan. The aim of this study is to make clear the process of change of the production technique of the western style furniture in Japan. We have given an outline of the building of Mitsui Minato Kurabu built in 1908. Next, we have educed four important tables from among 70 furnitures or more, and mainly described the character of production technique by remarking the structure of top board and legs and the way of jointing them. We have pointed out that the workman could not fully understand the structure of furniture and the properties of wood, and that those furnitures hold an important historical position both in design and in technique. OHANA,the old mansion of TACHIBANA,which stands at Yanagawa-shi, formerly consisted of many buildings. It was constructed with Japanese and Western styles in 1912. We have made clear the process of construction and the characteristics of this western style building. Next, we have classified the furnitures into four groups, and further have especially described the relation of material, design and techniques of production. The office of Seiriki-Shuzo, which stands at Okawa-shi, was constructed in 1906. We have discovered two interesting furnitures there, a rectangular table and a corner shelf, and the elements of decorative motifs resemble in design those of the elliptical table and the side-board in the Glover Garden in Nagasaki. We have concluded that the former two furnitures were producted in nagasaki and that there was the close relation between Okawa and Nagasaki.
