Research Abstract |
Reaction heat released from a chemical reaction generates a temperature gradient in the reaction medium or the surrounding medium. This temperature gradient in turn generates a refractive index gradient, which induces deflection of a probe beam. In this work, the reaction heat-induced optical beam deflection and its analytical application are investigated in detail. Experimental results show that the amplitude of the reaction heat-induced beam deflection signal can be used for quantitative analysis of reactants. Also, the time decay curve of the deflection signal can be used for monitoring and analyzing of a chemical reaction process. Furthermore, a real time one dimensional imaging system for the reaction heat-induced beam deflection is also developed, and applied for the measurement of activity distribution of immobilized enzyme.
