Research Abstract

A HUELS-TYPE ARC HEATING WIND TUNNEL OF MACH NUMBER 4 IS CONSTRUCTED,USING 30kW DIRECT CURRENT POWER SOURCE,ARC HEATER,TANK WITH 1 m DIAMETER 2 m LENGTH,AND 2 VACUUM PUMPS.CONTINUOUS 25 min OF RUNNING TIMES ARE REALIZED USING ARGON OR NITROGEN AS WORKING GASES,SUCCESSFULLY.
TO STUDY BASIC CHARACTERISTICS AND PERFORMANCE OF THIS ARC HEATER,MASS FLOW RATE m^^・ gr/sec IS CHANGED AND CORRESPONDING VOLTAGE V volt AND STAGNATION PRESSURE P_0 MPa OF THE HEATED GAS,ARE MESURED AT SEVERAL FIXED DISCHARGE CURRENT I ampere. AT THE SAME TIME,ALSO P_0 IS MEASURED AS A FUNCTION OF m^^・ WHEN THERE IS NO DISCHARGE CURRENT (I=0). FROM THESE MEASURED RESULTS,SEVERAL CHARACTERISTIC BEHAVIORS OF ARC HEATERS ARE DEDUCED.
FIRST,A METHOD IS PROPOSED TO ESTIMATE AVERAGE TEMPERATURE OF HEATED GAS.NEXT IT IS FOUND,WITHIN PRESENT EXPERIMENTAL RANGE,THAT I^2/m^^・ IS APPROXIMATELY,A FUNCTION OF V/I ( R=AVERAGE ELECTRIC DISCHARGE RESISTANCE). AND THIS FUNCTIONAL RELATION,WITHIN PRESENT EXPERIMENTAL RANGE,GIVES I^2/m^^・*R^<-alpha>.
IN ADDITION IT IS FOUND THAT DATA,TAKEN FROM ANOTHER JAPANESE AND GERMAN INSTITUTES AND UNIVERSITIES HAVING 10 TIMES OR MORE LARGER ARC HEATERS,FOLLOW ALSO THE ABOVE FUNCTIONAL RELATION APPROXIMATELY.IF THIS FUNCTIONAL RELATION IS PROVED FOR WIDE RANGE OF PARAMETERS,A SIMILARITY LAW MAY BE ESTABLISHED,WHICH IS VERY USEFUL IN DESIGNING AND CONSTRUCTING LARGE SCALE,HIGH PERFORMANCE FACILITIES.
