Research Abstract |
Comprehensive environmental information processing system was established. The system consists of pentium-prosessor based personal compute, printer, image scanner, HDD and MO and enable us to exchange any available data on internet. In order to evaluate the function of the system, following two case studies were conducted. 1) Preparation of suitability map for rice based cropping system in tropical Asia. Source data such as type and distribution of soils, topography temperature, precipitation, hours of sunshine were obtained on internet from UNEP/GRID of US Geological Survey to be fed for the preparation of suitability map of rice based cropping system. 2) Quantitative evaluation of soil fertility and land suitability for rice in East Kalimantan. Thirty-seven soils from upland and lowland were collected from East Kalimantan and analyzed for soil physico-chemical properties. Principal component analysis extracted factors controlling soil fertility, i.e.inherent potentiality, base status, and available phosphorus. Among these three factors, only base status was significantly highly correlated with land suitability degree obtained in FAO framework for land evaluation. The combination of FAO system with fertility evaluation system, inherent potentiality and available phosphorus factors in particular, is expected to provide us with more detail information for land suitability studies.
