Research Abstract |
The objective of the study was to develope a practical method for controling parturition in cattle by a combined administration of long-acting glucocorticoids, dexamethasone-isonicotinate (DEX) and an analog of prostaglandin F2a, cloprostenol (PG). Two experiments were carried out on two commercial dairy farms. In the first experiment using 56 pregnant Holstein Friesian cows, 25 cows were treated intramuscularly with 21 mg DEX on 274 days of pregnancy, followed by an intramuclular injection with 500 mcg CLO on 278 or 279 days. Other 16 cows were treated with CLO alone and 15 cows were not treated. In the second experiment DEX was administered to 17 cows on 272 days of pregnancy and CLO on the 279 days. Other cows were either treated with CLO alone or not treated. Percentages of cows which calved on 280 days of pregnancy (planned day of calving) were 77.3% in the group treated with DEX and CLO at an interval of 4 to 5 days and 70.6% in the other group treated with the combination at a 7 day interval. Only 37.5% and 20% of cows treated with CLO alone in the first and second experiments calved on 280 days of pregnancy. The incidence of retained placenta in DEX-CLO-treated group, CLO-treated group and not treated group was 75%, 60% and 26% in the first experiment, and 82.4%, 60% and 12.5% in the second trial, respectively. Prepartum serum concentrations of estrone sulfate (E1S) in cows with retained placenta were significantly lower than cows with normal expulsion of the placenta (P<0.01), regardless of the methods of the treatment for inducting parturition. No adverse effects on the dams and newborns were shown. In conclusion a combined administration of DEX and CLO is effective to control the time of parturition, although the treatment may not be useful for reducing the incidence of retained placenta. Provided that adequate cares for retained placenta are available, the treatment could be a practical tool for the planned parturition in cattle.
