Research Abstract

The distribution of immunocompetent cells in the wall of jaw cysts (15 odontogenic keratocysts and 5 radicular cysts) and the connective tissue capsule of 3 ameloblastomas were examined immunohistochemically.
1.The antibody UCHL-1, which recognized CD4^+/CD8^+T lymphocytes, was intensely expressed in the subepithelial inflammatory lesion of the cyst wall. In the non-inflamed cyst wall, UCHL-1-positive cells tended to be localized in the outermost area adjacent to the bone.
2.KP1 antibody which recognized a wide range of monocyte-macrophage lineage was observed in the perivascular area of fibrous wall as well as inflammatory foci. In the bone tissue, mononuclear cells around the newly formed bone and osteoclasts appeared to expressed this antibody.
3.HAM56 antibody for resident macrophages was observed in the fibrous tissue adjacent to the bone, particularly the cells in the perivascular area. Mononuclear cells in the bone tissue also expressed HAM56 antibody, but they were fewer than KP1-positive cells and no osteoclasts expressed this antibody.
4.MAC387 which recognized leukocytes having antigen L1 was intensely expressed in the inflammatory foci and a part of lining epithelium but no expression was discernible in the fibrous cyst wall and bone tissue.
From the results to date it is presumed that there is a certain relationship between the distribution of immunocompetent cells and growth of the cystic lesion.
