Research Abstract |
Most people lose their teeth with age and must use artificial prothetics such as dentures and artificial tooth roots. However, conventional dentures and implants are not satisfactory with regard to appropriate fit onto the surface of the oral tissue or problems due to sense of taste and biomechanical properties. To solve such problems, we started to investigate the hybdrid-type apatite-collagen composites with the noble functions similar to biological tissues. CO_3-surface-rich apatites were synthesized and mixed with collagen. These composites were successfully insolubilized by UV-irradiation and had suitable mechanical properties. When they were implanted into rat or rabbit, no significant inflammation was observed and the composites showed a good biocompatibility.
