Research Abstract

Skin blood flow, oxygen consumption, minute ventilation, respiratory frequency, heart rate, EEG and pain are measured during 60 minutes of maintaining the same position and after position change.
And these parameters are examined about their correlation.
The subjects are the total of 12 healthy adults of 23-64 years old, and a 76-years old unconscious patient. Results are summarized as follows.
(1) During 60 minutes of maintaining the same position, the pain and oxygen consumption increased gradually, but subsequently skin blood flow decreased. In the dorsal position, between the changes in skin blood flow and pain, these is a correlation of minus. And between skin blood flow and oxygen consumption, these is similar.
(2) When the pain increased rapidly, %alpha power in EEG decreased. The greatest pain came about 10-15 minutes after the decrease of %alpha power.
(3) During 60 minutes of maintaining the same position, minute ventilation, respiratory frequency and heart rate did not hardly changed.
(4) The change in skin blood flow of the patient upon position change is far greater than healthy adults.
The patient's skin blood flow increased along with the patient's opening her eyes, and during the patient keeps her eyes open, skin blood flow increased.
