Research Abstract |
We defined "hand coordination skills" in the context of current education through literature research, theacer surveys, and surveys of the state of children's hand coordination skills, and in addition, mede a proposal concerning the role of practical training and exercises in Home Economic education. 1. Historically, through the mechanization of industory, at not only the work place, but also at home, manual work has been decreasing and the "crisis of humanity "that is caused by a loss of hand coordination skills bas been extending across all aspects of life. In the history of school education "hand coordination skills" were taught in the context of drawing and handicraft class, and were not the main subject of Home Econonics Education. 2. According to the teacher survey concerning the recognition of hand oordination skills of children, we found that the awareness of these skills' importance was generally high in pre-school and highscool, and low in elementary and middle scools. 3. We conducted a survey of children's hand skill development concerning everyday life and household help as well as observations of "water pouring" and "moving beans with chopsticks" in the context of the two aspects of "hand coordination" and "skill of task performance". 4. In conclusion, using one's hands or entire body in everyday life contributes to children's both mental and physical growth in a substaintial way. Therefore, in order to ensure children's full development, it is necessary to include conscious, and purposeful use of the hands in school education and at home. In particular, practical training and exercises in home education play an important role in not only acquiring the skill of everday living, but also from the viewpoint of children's development.
