Research Abstract |
Japan's enterprise groups can be classed into four categories : enterprise groups of zaibatsu origin, independent enterprise groups, "fission" -type enterprise groups, and enterprise networks. As for the first, the debate over whether a few large zaibatsu dominate Japanese industry is a thing of the past, and the subject of present interest is how zaibatsu evolved into to-day's enterprise groups and networks. Independent enterprise groups have a wide diversity, ranging from groups of enterprises split off from parent companies to vertical subcontracting groups. Generally speaking internal and external organization is combined in an attempt to generate the respective merits mentioned above. Recently a number of groups have appeared, formed either by fission or by the coming together of independent firms, with no core and a division of labor determined by the nature of the business. These networks, which may have no formal capital or personnel links, are of increasing importance.
