Research Abstract

I have been making slow but steady progress in this study. So far I have completed the design of the software that I will use to evaluate the ability of subjects to comprehend hypertexts as opposed to conventional linear texts. At the beginning of the next academic year I will be ready to shoose subjects and begin data collection.
Study 1
Subjects will be given a conventional text to study and they will later be tested on their recognition, recall and their ability to apply the knowledge gained in their reading to a real-life task.
The same group of subjects will be given a text on a similar topic in the form of a HyperCard Stack(file)‐‐a nonlinear text.Again they will be tested on their recognition, recall and ability to apply their knowledge.
Study 2
I will also investigate if and how training in the production of nonlinear texts can improve one's ability to learn from them.Subjects will be trained in the workings of HyperCard and will eventually be coached into making their own nonlinear programs. After achieving some proficiency making their own‘stacks'their ability to glean knowledge from linear and nonlinear texts will again be tested.I hope to find out whether or not the making of nonlinear texts helped them to process(i.e.comprehend more easily)the nonlinear texts developed by others.
