Research Abstract |
The concept of mathematical education on the standpoint of ethnomathematics (MESEM) was developed, applying the cocept of metamathematics without destruction of the frame work of the traditionally supported concept of mathematical education, and the possibility of locating MESEM on mathematical education was demonstrated under a slight extention of the concept of mathematical education. In consideration of the practice of mathematics education, not only its possibility but also its necessity should be referred for clarifying the significance of MESEM.Then we examined the necessity of MESEM applying his theory of 'Western European mathematics as a cultural invader' by A.J.Bishop. As for the developement of subject matters of MESEM,we obtained a subject matter '20-adic numeral system in the Mayan civilization' for mathematical activity of undergraduates inthe course of mathematics for elementary school teachers. The system was informed by a Mexican junior high school teacher who is studying in our graduate school for Teacher Training Student. For future developement of subject matters of the magic square, we were given valuable pieces of information on magic squares by a talented researcher in Akita. On the level of in-service teacher training, 'Soft Mathematics History of Beauty', in which the golden section was dealt with mathematically with the background of beauty in art, and 'Linear Equations and Euclidean Algorithm' were developed and introduced. Although the subject matters developed are almost in the domain of European mathematics and the development has not been fully achieved the purpose of the research, which aims at introducing non-Western Mathematics into mathematics education, the subject matters developed are free from traditional systematic mathematics. The developement proves the possibility and significance of MESEM.The subject matters are changeable into those of school mathematics by suitable elaboration.
