| Research Abstract |
The representative of his scientific research, Tetsuo SAKURAI made investigations on the acculturation between tourism and traditional music in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore. From the co-operation of TAT (Tourism Authority of Thailand) and surveys of cultural shows at Bangkok, several points were in common inprograms : 1. arranged and shortened classical dance drama 2. stick battle 3. demonstation of Thei boxing forms 4. folk dances with North-eastern style. Accom-paning music, therefore, has great diversities. Playrs there were amateurs or semi-profesionals. In Chiang Mai, similar attempts were done with information of TAT.Different from Bangkok, traditional performing arts of minority were cores of tourism, though the status of performers were same as Bnagkok.
In Malaysia, similar investigations were done in Kuala Lumpur through the cooperation of MATIC (Malaysia Tourism Information Complex). Performing arts for tourists were consisted of Malay (majority), Chinese, Indian, Indonesi

an, etc., reflected their ethnic characteristics. The status of playrs were alike to Thailand. Similar investigations done in Singapore with the co-operation of TIC (Tourist Information Centers), different from the formers, this young country doesn't have strong ethnic identity in music. Struggling in multi-ethnic constructions, they bagan to get a new ethnic identity putting the arts of Malay people round the center.

The co-researcher, Shuzo ISHIMORO has concentrically made attemptson changes of traditional music in tourist industry in Sarawak, Malaysia twice. lst attempt : at Sarawak Cultural Village (center of ethnic culture) with the co-operation of State government, State museum, MATIC.Cultural shows of seven peoples with visual exhibitions provided. 2nd attemt : supplementary attempt in Kuching and wide investigatoins in Singapore, Penanng, Kuala Lumpur (within Malacca), with the co-operation of TIC (Singapore), Penag Cultural Center, and MATIC (K.I,.).
