Research Abstract |
This research program is a preliminary field work of Indonesian volcanic crater lakes for the following full field research which will be done from the next year on. 1. Preliminary field research on Indonesian crater lakes Because of difficulties in approach and remoteness from city area in tropical mountaneous region, collecting information about transportation, water and food supply, man power which will be available in the area, and the places for camping is very important for successful field work in Indonesia. Firstly B.Takano and P.Delmelle visited the worldmost acidic (pH=0.27) crater lake, Kawah Ijen, in Java Island. We understood that the most convenient route to this volcano is from Wanuwangi in western Java, wheretruck transportation is available to the foot of the mountain. Materials for camping at the top can be obtained in this town, so it needs not to bring these from Japan. The road to the terminal where everything should be carried on foot is only open to the person who

gets an official document from Volcanological Survey of Indonesia in Jakarta. Secondly we visited Volcano Kelut in central Java. This volcano has often erupted ; the most recent eruption occurred on Feb. 10,1992. Explosions in the crater lake have frequently caused lahars (mud flood) by which many lives were lost. We found that transportation by car is quite easy and that recent information about volcanic activity of this volcano is available from the obsrvatory on the mountainfoot. Dr. Delmelle speaks Indonesian language fluently and helped me a great deal realize a present Indonesian natural and social environments. 2. Domestic field research on Yugama and Oyunuma crater lakes and related discussion on a next year expedition Professor Alain Bernard at Universite Libre de Bruxelles was invited to Japan. We have done some joint researches on Yugama, Kusatsu-Shirane volcano and Oyunuma, Noboribetsu Hot Springs. At Yugama we successfully obtained some acoustic profiles of Yugama, which are the firts such survey at this lake. Molten sulfur floating on Oyunuma lake was sampled for detecting rare metals in it. Also we discussed intimately the details of the next year expedition in Indonesia.Prof. Bernard and Dr. Delmelle will help us in this coming field work. Less
