Research Abstract |
Dr.Wakamatsu made observations with a multi-object spectograph of the 48-inch Schmidt telecope at Anglo Australia Observatory, in order to detect wall structures between Ophiuchus super cluster of galaxies and Hercules one.High quality spectrum of more than five hundred galaxies were obtained by the present observations.A sign of wall structure perpendicular to a local super cluster plane was detected. Dr.Ichikawa and Mr.Honma observed several distant galaxies in 10,000-20,000 km/s red shift velocities using a high spatical resolution CCD camera SIS mounted on Canada-France-Hawaii telescope at Mouna Kea in the US.They obtained V,R,I images of five galaxies. From the present data and Nobeyama's CO emission data, the distance of the galaxies and the Hubble constant were obtained. Dr.Baba conducted observations of Be binary stars at the San Pedro Martir Observatory in Mexico.Their developed speckle spectroscopic camera was attached to the Cassegrain focus of the 2.1m telescope. Some of the ob

served Be binaries will be spatially separated and analyzed spectroscopically. They also conducted observations of widely separated binaries and have shown that a widely separated staris are usable for high-resolution Shift-and-Add imaging as a reference. In collaboration with the Carnegie Institution, Drs.Kashikawa and Sekiguchi observed clusters of galaxies in BVR three color banks, using their mosaic CCD camera (4000x7000pixels) with a telescope at Las Campnas observatory. They found a significat difference in the luminosity function in the faint regions of these clusters. This difference is mostly due to dwarf galaxies. They are doing further data analysis and preparing articles. Dr.Tamura and Mr.Murakawa have conducted near-infrared spectroscopic surveys of background and embedded stars toward the Taurus dark cloud with using the prism array spectrometer (PASP2) on the University of Wyoming 2.3m telescope and on the Mount Lemmon 1.5m telescope. The great number of the sample has enabled us to determine in detail the distribution of ice-band features at 3 micron within the cloud.Furthermore, important information on the growth of ice mantle within dark clouds and circum stellar environments. Dr.Sugai flew twice to the United States in order to carry out near-infrared spectroscopic observations of starburst galaxies by using Lick 3-m telescope.Near-infrared observations are useful for understanding their activities. He observed starburst galaxies in a wide range of wavelengths by using a double-beamed camera. The data of about ten observed galaxiesI are being reduced. The emission mechanisms seem to vary drastically among galaxies. This kind of decompositions will enable us to understand the origin and evolution of starbursts. Dr.Yamada made an observation with near-infrared camera QUIRC attached to the University of Hawaii 2.2m telescope at Mauna Kea Observatory (U.S.A.) to identify a distant cluster of galaxies around a quasar at z=1.1.At this redshift the optical-NIR color of elliptical galaxies, which constitute clusters, are observed very red.By using this nature he is trying to identify a cluster at the region where enhancement of galaxy surface density has already been detected in deep optical image. He could obtain reasonably good data and data-analysis is in progress now. Dr.Sugitani used CTIO 1.5m telescope with CIRIM to survey 45 bright-rimmed clouds with IRAS point sources for evidence of triggered star formation in/aroundOb associations of the southern sky.He has completed 70% of JHK imagingfor these objects and found many clusters of low-mass or intermediate-massstars which are considered to be forme due to the triggering by UV formthe OB associations.
