Research Abstract

One of major purposes of our project is to obtain good onychophoran (peripatus) strains for neurobiology from a view point of phylogeny. In order to breed onychophorans, we need original living materials.
We searched any kind of reports concerning Onychophora to konw places collecting peripatus. The most places where the animals were collected are located Carribean countries, so that we explored countries in the Carribean Sea such as Belize, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Trinidad which are lands of the Gondwanian lineage. We have first been to Belize and Puerto Rico in December, 1995 and then to Venezuela and Trinidad in March, 1996. These periods were in the dry season in the year in the said countries. We read that the dry season was better to collect peri-patus because they often to gather at a particular places. We could fortunately find an unidentified species at a tropical rain forest in Puerto Rico and Macroperipatus torquatus beside a stream in a tropical rain forest in Trinidad. However, it was tough works to find peripatus in these trips. We suspect reasons for the difficulty that population of peripatus has already gotten small or we could not get to appropriate points where they had ga-thered. If in the latter case, our surveys should be carried out during the rainy season such as a period from May to September in those areas. We are thinking areas around Arima valley in Trinidad as one of the best place to look for peripatus next time because it involves a research station which offers a base camp for animal exploring.
