Research Abstract |
The effects of radioactive fallout following nuclear weapon tests on the population in the Semipalatinsk region, which is located in the northern part of the Kazakhstan Republic have been studied by a collaboration between Research Institute for Radiation Biology and Medicine, Hiroshima University and Kazakhstan Scientific Research Institute for Radiation Medicine and Ecology since 1995. To date, all of the published reports concerning to the effects of radiation on populations near nuclear weapon test sites are based on data provided by the Defense Department of the former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. We are focusing on radiation dosimetry and associated diseases in the population near the Semipalatinsk test site. In 1995 and 1996 Japanese group visited Semipalatinsk to measure and to sample soil and brick according to the guidance of Dr.Gusev. The samples which weighted about 100 kg each were brought back to Hiroshima and have been measured. Dolon is the settlement with the highest dose of 89 cGy among the settlements where we have researched. This is the similar situation to the previous reports. Semipalatinsk city exhibits the secondly highest dose among settlements of the present study. This is completely different from the previous reports. This city is the biggest city near Nuclear test site. Since the population of the city is three hundreds and fifty thousand, this value is serious. The further investigation will be needed to confirm this.
