Research Abstract

Structure and properties of nitrogen containing pitches prepared catalytically from quinoline and lsiquinoline by aid of AlCl_3 were studied. In spite of the same preparative conditions, quinoline exhibited higher pitch yield, slightly higher softening point and higher molecular weight. Both of quinoline and isoquinoline pitches which were prepared at 280゚C for 4hrs were isotropic, however quinoline pitch was converted to mesophase pitch after heat-treatment at 380゚C for 6hrs in absence of AlCl_3. On the contrary isoquinoline pitch could not produce mesophase pitch. The condensation mechanism is discussed by taking account of different nitrogen Iocation of uinoline and isoquinoline in the 1 or 2 position of the naphthalene ring.
Quinoline and isoquinoline pitches were found to be carbonized to cokes of different optical textures. Quinoline pitch exhibited large flow domain and goo graphitizability which was measured by means of X-ray diffraction, whereas isoquinoline pitch produced isotropic cokes and poor graphitizability. Dehydrogenation was very similar all through the carbonization process, while the elimination rate of nitrogen was very different in the carbonization. The carbonization process was investigated in terms of behavior of nitrogen atom and changes of properties o pitches during the carbonization. The basicity of produced cokes was also examined.
