Research Abstract

(1) Insect pests and diseases occurring on Cruciferous crops in North Thailand were surveyed and listed up. Insect pests : Diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), common cutworm (Spodoptera litura) and cabbage white butterfly (Pieris canidia indica) are occurring in every locations and causing much damage. Stripe flea beetle (Phyllotreta striolata) is also occurring in many fields, however, populations was very different in fields. Green peach aphid (Myzus persicae), turnip aphid (Lipaphis erysimi) and cotton aphid (Aphis gossypii) were observed in many fields. Among them, green peach aphid and turnip aphid were seemed to be important for their high populations. Diseases : Fungus diseases of Alternaria leaf spot (Alternaria brassicicola) and downy mildew (Peronospora parasitica) and bacterial diseases of black rot (Xanthomonas campestris pv.campestris) and bacterial soft rot (Erwinia carotovora subsp.carotovora) were observed in every locations, however, damage by these diseases were s … More eemd to be not so severe. The mosaic diseases caused by turnip mosaic virus were occurring in Chinese cabbage, cabagge and cauliflower, and the occurrence of the virus was high in Chinese cabagge causing large yield loss. Cucumber mosavic virus was detected in one sample of cauliflower.
(2) Natural enemies were found from the following insect pests. In diamondback moth : Trichogrammatoidea sp.from its eggs ; Cotesia plutellae from its larvae ; Diadromus collaris from its pupae. In cabbage white butterfly : Cotesia glomerata from its larvae ; Brachymeria lasus and Brachymeria sp.from its pupae. In aphids : Cheilomenes sexmaculatus.
(3) Seasonal variations in emergence of diamondback moth and common cutworm were investigated using pheromon traps from December of 1995 to November of 1997 in the farmer's field growing bloccoli in Sarapee district of Chiang Mai City. The population of diamondbug moth was high in November to April in both years. The population of common cutworm was high in November to January, however, the occurrence of the insect was very different in each year. The populations of these insects were decreased suddenly after raining.
