Research Abstract |
We collected the following fifteen water samples from Cebu, Manila and Davao in the Philippines : A, deep well water in Cebu City, B, rice field water in Cebu City ; C, sea water from the port in Cebu City ; D, river water in Cebu City ; E, tap water in Cebu City ; F, rice field water in Cavite City, Cavite Province (near Manila) ; G, rice field water in Laguna Province (near Manila) ; H, rice field water in Valenzuela Town, Bulacan Province (north from Manila) ; I, tap water in Makati City, Metro Manila ; J, Pasig River water in Pasig City, Metro Manila ; K, sea water from the port in Pasay City, Metro Manila ; L, rice field water in Panabo Town, Davao North Province ; M, Bankerohan River water in Davao City ; N, tap water in Davao City ; O, rice field water in Mintal Town, Davao Province ; P, sea water from the port in Davao City. Among these, the three sea water samples could not be tested because of their high osmotic pressure. Therefore, we used in total the thirteen samples. In th

e present study, we measured by using CG-MS the amounts of the following twenty-two pesticides in the water samples : 1, Simazine ; 2, Thiobencarb ; 3, Isoprocarb (MIPC) ; 4, Fenobucarb (BPMC) ; 5, Carbofuran ; 6, Diazinon ; 7, Malathion ; 8, Ediphenfos ; 9, Butachlor ; 10, Cyhalothrin ; 11, Cyfluthrin ; 12, Cypermethrin ; 13, Deltamethrin ; 14, Phenthoate (PAP) ; 15, Fenitrothion ; 16, Oxadiazon ; 17, Carbaryl (NAC) ; 18, Pencycuron ; 19, Mepronil ; 20, Propyzamide ; 21, Iprobenfos ; 22, Isoprothiolane. None of the pesticide concentration in the water samples was found to be more than the Japanese tolerance limit values (0.001-0.0003 mg/1). However, some pesticides, for example, Isoprothiolane (the tolerance limit : 0.001 kg/1) at 0.0007 kg/1 in the deep well water in Cebu City, were detected, though their amounts were less than the tolerance limit values. Further studies to detect more kinds of pesticides repetitively in the water samples from more sites are needed, in order for us to make a substantial conclusion on the presence of residual pesticides in the bodies of water of the Philippines.
