Research Abstract |
This study intends to make an international comparison of the indexes which would be derived from searching systematically the prominent abstracting and indexing databases for scientific papers. The study also includes a survey on the current situation of compilation and dissemination of scientific databases in Europe and North America. The results would be analyzed to clarify the relationship of research activities to the scientific databases which shoud be created or utilized in the research. The results of statistical survey of number of papers registered in abstracting databases show that the papers from Japan have been continuously increasing from 1976 through 1993, so as to make Japan the world second biggest country in all of 26 fields of science, engineering and medicine, while in the other 3 fields in medicine, Japan is ranked as the 3rd. Shares of Japanese papers in the world total have reached over 10% in many fields in 1990s. However, the citations to Japanese papers do not

appear to be sufficient, and the other survey was conducted, in which citations in papers of Japanese society journals mainly written in Japanese language were investigated, in order to analyze internationallization of Japanese Papers. The survey for scientific databases in the West shows that many databases have become constructed by researchers themselves. This should be mainly attributed to the recent development of the internet connections among researchers as the information channel. As this denotes consolidation of research activities with database construction, a sample survey on ratio of database related expense in total research budget for the projects subsidized by NSF and NIH was conducted. This budgetary index would be contrasted with the Japanese situation. The recent trend towards decentralization of database construction makes standardization for databases far more important, and the relevant cases of standardization in the West have been gathered. In these surveys, statistics and materials useful for the promotion of scientific research in Japan were obtained, and the further analysis for them is continued. Less
