Research Abstract |
This project has sought to examine historically the relationships between social class-and status especially in the pre-modern eras--and occupation in the west. Though there are still several regions and eras to be explored, findings we have attained as a group could cast a certain light on the basic understanding on this topic. In the following areas we have accomplished considerable results explaining the consciousness and behavior of specific class and occupational groups : attitudes toward work and occupation in ancient Greece ; social positions of bishop and jurist in medieval Europe ; "Bildungsburgertum, " "Junker, " artisans and journalists in modern Germany ; Jews and gentry in modern England ; priests and middle classes in modern France ; planters and journalists in the United States ; intelligentsia in modern Russia.
