Research Abstract |
In this study, we have carried out characteristics of carbon- and nitrogen-substituted nanotubes. Results of this study (19995-1997) are described below. (1)Although carbon nanotubes and polyacenes are theoretically expected to exhibit metallic properties, there is always a possibility of metal-insulator transition widely observed in one-dimensional systems. Thus, we predicted the electronic properties of carbon nanotubes and polyphenanthrenes. As a result we showed that there is a close correlation between the crystal orbitals near the Fermi level and the metallic properties. (2)We purified using a heat-treatment method carbon nanotubes, and conducted electron spin resonance and SQUID measurements. Carbon nanotubes are shown to exhibit metallic properties just like graphite from these measurements.
