Research Abstract |
In order to improve home-care services to the elderly using an information network technology, a group-ware system for the collaborative work environment is proposed. First, we carried out an investigation about members of staff and the communication network between them at a certain nursing home. Using this information, we developed a database. Then, a group-ware system called "Virtual Nursing Home" was constructed. To build this system, we used a metaphor of a nursing home, linked by a computer network. Through this network, home helpers, nurses and social-workers (home-care service providers) as well as their clients are able to build a common database and communicate with each other using a videophone and electronic messages through the Internet. Finally, some staff members of a nursing home evaluated our system. Their opinion was that the Virtual Nursing Home system has the advantage of holding and integrating their common data. Nevertheless several points of concern were raised : a complex user-interface, a not-fast-enough network speed, an invasion of privacy and an unclear burden of the cost.
