Research Abstract |
Torrent intakes has been constructed in various places in the world in order to intake river water in mountainous area for local water demand. In most cases these intakes were constructed, operated and maintained by local people. However, a fixed weir with sluice gates and a intake has been planned and designed in torrents in many cases which is not always suitable for torrent morphology and requires troublesome operation and maintenance. The developed new intakes such as "Bar Screen Compound Type" enable to open a new water resources development method consisting of torrent intakes and on-stream reservoir or off-stream reservoir system. In order to maintain adequate water resources in an isolated island, reservoirs and irrigation ponds were constructed to store torrent during rainfall. Because of limited watershed area in small island, water from the other watershed areas had to be transferred to keep the reservoir with enough water storage. For water diversion works, diversion ditch can be designed for transferring water from one watershed to another. So, this study was aimed to establish a rational water utilization system by relating diversion of torrent intakes to reservoirs in small watershed in a small island. Nozaki Island which is located in Nagasaki Prefecture was selected as a torrent intake project site for the research purpose. The constructional scale and size of each torrent intake were designed. The whole study of the project consisted of the investigation and planning of water resources of the Nozaki island. Also, computer methods for bearing capacity of foundations of hydraulic structures and slope stability of fill type dam were developed. Numerical methods such as finite element analysis which taken into account the shear band effect were shown to be effective for these complex nonlinear problems.
