Research Abstract

This study is undertaken to elucidate the possible relationship between foot cadence and cardiac rhythm during running and also the mechanisms of caridio-locomotion coupling.
Occurence of cardio-locomotion coupling was verified in all of 17 male subjects during treadmill running.
Slight sigmoidal relationship was obserbed between intercardiac timing of foot landing and instantaneous R-R intervals. This is caused by the mechanism that instantanous R-R interval is affected by the timing of foot landing in such a way that cardiac cycle is shortened when the landing is done at the ejection period, while it is prolonged when the landing is done at the early diastole.
When the subject dropped from a platform of 30cm high to the floor, the instantaneous R-R interval is affected by the timing of dropping.
From these findings, we speculated that the sensory stimuli provoked by foot landing inhibits the cardiac vagus center which sends inhibitory impulses to the heart, and the occurence of cardiac-locomotion coupling can be explained by the same mechanism.
