Research Abstract |
The study analyzes the results of distance education using the PictureTel system, a compressed-graphics system via telephone lines, in comparison with traditional in-class education. The instructor in Osaka gave a lecture to the students in Tokyo. To compare distance instruction with in-class instruction, the same instructor lectured in Tokyo. Although instruction sent from a distant place makes the evaluation of instruction somewhat lower than what it would have been if the same had been given in a conventional manner, the negative impact can be minimized by paying special attention to the way of giving a lecture. The cost of the distance instruction was less than half of that of instruction in a conventional style. tance education for a small group sent via telephone lines is feasibe. For evaluating long term effects, the monetary effects on UAJ graduates were calculated on the basis of their annual earnings collected through a questionnaire survey. They were compared with direct and indirect costs by using rates of return. The result shows that UAJ education yields high rate of return to the graduates, excepting the person who had bachelor degree before entering UAJ.If the student number increases by UAJ's nationwide expansion, the cost effectiveness will be better and the ratio of government burden will decrease because of economies of scale in distance education. The study also aims at identifying the factors that have strong influence on the effects of UAJ.It has been found that the factor which has the most influence on the primary effects is education of high quality. On the other hand, the factors influential to the continuative effects are "motivations" in terms of vocational merits and "motivations" and "the acquisition of knowledge" in terms of the enhancement of one's cultural level. It follows that attacting motivated applicants and motivating them at the time they start studying at the UAJ are crucial in achieving the objectives of the university.
