Research Abstract |
1.Construction of the database system One of the main achivements in this study is the construction of database and the software which enables to see the organization and cohesion of so-called BUNDAN paragraphs. A hundred of argumentative essays, all of which are collected from RONDAN articles in the Asahi Shimbun, are ready to be analyzed by this program. Each of the sentences in an essay is labeled in terms of its semantic function, and the paragraphs (= BUNDAN) are also labeled according to their semantic roles in the text. One paragraph corresponds to one record, of which constituents are the ID,one BUNDAN label, some sentence labels, and the contents of the paragraph. Any one of the two types of labels and/or a combination of the specific labels could be referenced and counted. 2.Analysis of the organization and cohesion of Japanese writings We obtained some basic data concerning how texts are organized by using above mentioned database system. Focuses of our analysis were mainly on 1) the relation between the grammatical structure of a sentence and its semantic/pragmatic function, 2) reflection of the semantic functions of sentences on the semantic role of a BUNDAN paragraph, 3) cohesion of paragraphs, 4) correlation between the text type (assertion, report, exposition, etc.) and the distribution of BUNDAN labels. 3.Analysis in terms of language learning theories We tried to clarify how to teach and what to teach in writing class, while reconsidering the meaning of writing behavior and writing ability.
