Research Abstract |
An appratus for the measurement of waves and currents in near-shore area was designed and fabricated. Through our experience of field measurements, we have had ideas that the instruments should be transportable by one or two persons and free from cables connecting them to recording or power supplying devices for safe and easy doployment, and that they should be unnecessary to open the lid of the case which houses the electronic unit to change recording media or battery. Moreover, each one of multiple apparatuses deployed in array must enable us to make synchronized measurements so that we can obtain simultaneous data, although they are completely separated electrically. The apparatus consists of the following units ; 1.measuring.unit, 2.power supplying unit, 3.recording unit, 4.control unit, 5.communication branch unit. ls are stored in memory together with the magnetic bearings taken with a compass, then they are written on PCMCIA flash ROM.The power source is a sealed lead acid battery with capacity of 12V25Ah. All parts of this unit are housed in a watertight and pressure resistant stainless steel case. Prior to station the apparatus, control data and measuring schedule are written on the ROM f the outside of the case without electrical contact through infra-red communication port using an optical data communication module which is connected to a portable computer. The measured data is also withdrawn by using the optical communication module. The transmission rate is 115Kbit/s and it takes about 13 minutes to transmit data of four megabytes. In order to obtain simultaneous data using multiple apparatuses, a multiple branch communication unit is used to transmit control signals and measuring schedule, and to start up counting clock pulses.
