Research Abstract

Some compounds in the NaZr_2 (PO_4) _3 family have been reported in recent years to be low thermal expansion materials. In particular, KZr_2 (PO_4) _3 [KZP] ceramic showed a near zero thermal expansion, since the thermal expansion coefficients of KZP crystal were alpha_a= -4.4*10^<-6>/゚C,alpha_c= +7.6*10^<-6>/゚C,and alpha_<avg>= -0.4*10^<-6>/゚C.Consequently, the KZP ceramic is expected to have an exellent thermal shock resistance. In this work, a ceramic gas burner-head was developed from KZP.KZP was synthesized by calcining at 1200-1300゚C for 2 h from (ZR) _2P_2O_7 and KH_2PO_4. Sintering of KZP ceramic was promoted by adding ametal oxide such as MgO.The dense KZP ceramic was prepared by sintering at 1250-1350゚C.The maximum strength of KZP ceramic was about 150MPa. The linear thermal expansion coefficient of KZP ceramic was near zero. KZP ceramic burner-head was formed by die-pressing of KZP semi-dry powder. As regarding thermal shock resistance, the obtained KZP ceramic burner-head did not crack by quenching from 800゚C into ice water, and even after the quenching from 800゚C was repeated several times.
