Research Abstract |
This study deals with the production of hollow cylindrical laminated veneer lumber (LVL) with helical-winding method. The design and the manufacture of prototype machine on a trial basis and the production technology of cylindrical LVL were investigated. The results obtained were followings ; 1.Rotary-cut veneers were successfully jointed into a long tape by sewing parallel to the length of the tape (across the grain of veneer). 2.The effect of lamination with interlocked grain on the modules of elasticity of LVL was analyzed theoretically, and verified with experimental data. 3.Mixed resole-type adhesive resin proved to shorten the pressing time dramatically to 5 sec at the temperature of 40 C on the adhesive layr. 4.A helical winder with a fixed mandrel showed it principally possible to produce the cylindrical LVL in the continuous process. 5.A prototype helical winder with a slide-shifter was designed and set up on a trial basis and cylindrical LVLs were successfully manufactured. 6.The deformation behavior and the stress distribution due to shrinkage in cylindrical LVL with helical interlocked grain was clarified by a modeling approach with a two-dimensional finite element method.
