Research Abstract

For the purpose of improving the performance of the Savonius windmill, a wind concentrator was mounted around the windmill. The power characteristics of the windmill and the effects of the concentrator were investigated from the results of experiments carried out by using a wind tunnel. The power output was measured under two different loaded conditions. One of them was the control of rotation speed with a stepping motor, and the other was a loading with an electromagnetic brake. The results are summarized as follows,
1.The Bach type 2 bucket-rotor offered the highest power output in most of all experimental conditions.
2.The tested concentrator had a cross-sectional area of 3 times larger than the wind mill rotor. In some cases, it provided about 60% improvement in power. Those results showed the effects of wind concentration.
3.In spite of the improvement of the power output, the power coefficient was decreased with increase in crosssectional area. The concentrator was considered to be susceptible to improvement.
4.The concentrator with 8 panels attached at the panel angle of 45゚provided the best experimental results.
5.Under the loaded condition with an electromagnetic brake, the power output was measured smaller. Friction was considered to be one of the reasons, but it has not been clear.
6.The maximum power output was roughly proportional to the cube of the wind velocity.
