| Research Abstract |
This project aimed at developing a useful software for Japanese researchers to write reports in English by saving thier time. This software has a huge corpus, a sentence database, gathered from published reports in an international academic magazine, and is able to provide adquate example sentences from the corpus that writers wants, and all writers using Internet can easily use the services by this software.
The area on which the corpus was contructed was targeted at biochemistry. We have gathered sentences from 'Journal of Biochemistry, vol.270, issues 15-50, ' and made a database of sentence on a workstation. We have achieved our aim, that the database should have all important and frequently used words. The database have 18,673,200 words and 158,331 word items. This corpus is not only one of the biggest corpus all over the world, but also able to immediately be use for practical applicaton as is.

f the words which appeared over 50 times in the corpus mentioned above. Namely, the thesaurus has as low-frequently-used word as only one use per 400,000 words. The words contained in the thesaurus are coverd over 96% of the corpus. Therefore, the thesaurus can provide words corresponding all the idea which actualy used in scientific articles, and does not contain words which had not been used in scientific articles. Since the later words may be inadequate for use in scientific articles, the thesaurus helps Japanese researchers to correctly select words. However, further studies about grouping words and selecting key words will be necessary.
User interface is one of the most important parts of software when it is practically used. We designed that users can access the system via Internet with WWW browser such as Netscape. Therefore, user can easily cut and paste example sentences from the system to his articles editing with word processor on a personal computer, and maintainance of the system is easey because managing users is not essential.
