Research Abstract |
This research surveys the process of historical evolution of the Vajradhatu-mandala by examining both the textual materials including tantras, commentaries and sadhanas, and the bequeathed articles including the paintings and the statues. However here I reported chiefly about the characteristics of the mandalas described in the Sarvatatha gatatattvasamgraha-sutra and the Vajrasekharamahaguhyayoga-tantra. Many of studies on the Vajradhatu-mandala in Japan, have been placed importance on clarifing of the respective characteristics of the bequeathed articles. But for the reason, the contents of the mandala in the fundamental texts, namely the Tattvasamgraha-sutra and the Vajrasekhara-tantra, have been not carefully made a close investigation of. Because the contents of their texts have been not precisely reflected on the interpretation of the bequeathed articles. For example, the basis of the disposition of Hindu deties (bahyavajrakula) drawn in the Genzu-mandala (the nine assembly mandala)

, had been not pointed. And the names of four female deties drawn in outer corners of eighth mandala of the Genzu-mandala, that is Trilokavijayamahamandala, had been not kown. But I found the descriptions in the Tattvasamgraha-sutra. Also, a thousand buddhas of the present cosmic period and eighty Hindu deties drawn together in outer places of the central mandala of the Genzu-mandala. The source is found in the Vajrasekhara-tantra. In addition, there ara the sources of the five families (the five kulas), the feminization of four paramita and so on in the Vajrasekhara-tantra. The Vajradhatu-mandala was at first described in the Tattvasamgraha-stitra during the later period of 7th cetury. After that, the mandala developed further by adding some new elements in the Vajrasekhara-tantra. Most of the bequeathed articles was produced under the influence of their texts. And the importance is that some texts of the Sriparamadya-tantra etc. made during the period between the Tattvasamgraha-sutra and the Vajrasekhara-tantra. I found the fact by this research. Less
