Research Abstract

This research is an integral part of comparative study of man's cultural adaptation in the later Upper Palaeolithic period in mid-latitude areas, namely, the Late Palaeolithic of northeastern Japan, the French Magdalenian, and North Amerian Paleoindians. It includes the follwing approaches. 1.Methodology of the study of 'activity areas' is discussed, in terms of ethno-archaeological hypotheses by L.R.Binford such as 'curated' and 'expedient' technologies. Relationships between spatial distributions of lithics and human activities are pursued. 2.Characteristics of the Paleoindian adaptive system are discussed. Case studies such as the Mill Iron site (Montana), which was excavated by Dr.George C.Frison of the Univ.of Wyoming and I had excellent opportunities to participate, are examined from the viewpoint of subsistence strategy, that is big game hunting, and technological organizations that were suited to high mobility settlement systems. 3.Theoretical considerations for reconstructing … More social organizations are discussed. 4.Implications of ethnographical research of hunter-gatherers, to the study of the Palaeolithic are discussed. 5.Settlement pattern models of the Magdalenian period are examined, with special reference to site functions, subsistence strategies, seasonality, activity area research, and lithic distribution studies. Variability of the Magdalenian adaptive systems is discussed, for cases in France, Spain, and Germany. Theoretical problems in applying 'ethno-archaeological models' to reconstruction of palaeolithic cultural systems are discussed. 6.A Magdalenian case study, that is, the Abri Dufaure prehistoric project by Dr.L.G.Straus of the Univ.of New Mexico, provides data bases for the study of lithic distribution and human activities, and formation processes of site structure patterns. An aspect of this funded research turned out to be unsuccessful and further efforts are to be made. It is a survey project of eastern and southern foothills of Mt.Zao to investigate Late Palaeolithic sites as a comparative data base. Less
