Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study is to colect the foundational materials necessary for studying animal remains in archeology. The fundamental materials are 1) database of animal remains reported by archaeologists or zoologists, and 2) image database involving the atlas of bones. We planned to study both 1) and 2) at first, but the preparation of the image database has been found out not enough to our purposes because of the insufficiently of skeletons. We wish therefore continue the study upon obtaining the full collection of skeletons in cooperation with zoologists, if possible. The animal remains database is limited in the age to the Jomon culture. The proposed database is composed of documentary one and remains database. We have collected the documents which had not been obtained before, we already incorporated the archaeological data into computer this year. Then we examined items and practical use method of the databeses helped by cooperating investigators along with the registration work concerned. These data were, furthermore checked by cooperating investigators. Thus, the data that we registered ourselves are 1,089 with respect to documentary database and 1,293 concerning remains database. The 494 data which were collected when I received Grant-in-Aid for encouragement of young scientists in 1991 are also contained in addition to the above. We were not able to take into consideration all the data in the final report by budgetary limitation, but were able to include 700 data this time. In addition to the above, we will announce these database to researchers connected in the near future, while we wish to accumulate the data which were not taken care of this time and the data which were considered inappropriate.
