Research Abstract |
1.Social behavior and reproductive parameters of free-ranging senile Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata at Takasakiyama) and West African chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes verus at Bossou, Guinea) have been studied. Activity of senile female macaque goes down but her sociality doesn't decrease because daughters and other younger females aproach to groom her. Reproductive rate gradually decreases but lasts util 22-3 years old and suddenly drops. Females still survive another 4 or 5 years. Activity of senile female chimpanzee of more than 40 years old doesn't look change but she travels mostly with her family group and rarely does alone. Reproductive rate slightly decreases after 35 years old but lasts over 40.
